Media Asabiyyah in the New Islamic Civilization and the Alternative Future of Media; Transition from the Government-Oriented Media to Civilization-Oriented Media

Studies on history of media show that, regardless of their type or being modern or traditional, media can be a driving force in any social movement and reform. This paper investigated the structural and content requirements of media, both in making the grounds for and from the perspective of the new Islamic civilization. The main question was the structure and content required for media if they are to act as drivers of and contributors to realization of the new Islamic civilization. As the type and behavior of media in local, national, and civilization levels are different, it is expected that, in the new Islamic civilization, the media act in accordance to the level and scale of this civilization. The concept of civilization-oriented media on the one hand, and its characteristics (e.g. a civilization-oriented approach, aiming towards solidarity in spite of plurality, monotheism[1], justice-orientation, progressivism, rejection of dominance, etc.) in terms of content on the other, and the concept of media asabiyyah, based on characteristics such as convergence and cooperation, as well as comprehensive media connectivity based on ideological principles rather than media, group, national, regional, tribal, ethnical, or racial interests are the primary findings of this study. The data were collected using documentary method and analyzed via a descriptive-analytical process.
